Orjak

Possible depiction of an Orjak from a 16th century manuscript.

The Rogat Orjak (Slovene for horned giant, according to Hardwick and Little's bestiary) are a polite, mild and well-spoken species that originally hail from the area around the Slovenian/Italian border, before apparently migrating around Europe. Highly intelligent, their torsos bear a certain resemblance to humans, despite their large size. Contrary to popular belief, Orjaks are not a species of dragon, and tend to be contemptuous of them. Their diet consists mainly of sheep and goats.

Information about the Orjak can only be found in one place, Chapter 3, Page 26.

Known Rogat Orjaks

Sivo

Sivo is the first confirmed Orjak to appear in the comic, although he's always seen being possessed by Reynardine. He was a "good friend" of Mr. Eglamore, though how they meet is unknown.

Nevihta

Nevihta was Sir Young's Rogat. Nevihta has never been seen, but there is a monument to her and Sir Young in Young's Park.

Thorns Orjak

Only picture of Thorns Rogat

Mr. Thorn's Rogat

A third Rogat is seen only once in the closing of Chapter 14: The Fangs of Summertime. This one is Mr. Thorn's partner at the time Surma and Anja went to Gunnerkrigg Court. The author has noted that this is NOT Sivo, it is also apparent as Sivo does not have the same symbols as this one does on the forehead and arms.

Hallurjak

Zimmys hallucination

Zimmys Hallucination

Zimmy once hallucinated an Orjak-like creature during Chapter 11: Dobranoc, Gamma. It is possible that she learnt about Orjaks from her Polish friend, Gamma, as they appear limited to the Continent. But according to Tom that hallucination was 'a future distortion', so one can assume it means she saw a twisted version of Sivo/Reynardine's future as a prisoner.

Other

On page Chapter 40, Page 5, which is set some years ago, Eglamore and Jones see two Rogats flying around in the sky. It is not known who these are, they might even be some of the already known Rogats.

Trivia

  • Judging by the shape of Orjaks' heads, their colour and geographical origin, they are probably inspired by real life animal Olm, a cave-dwelling amphibian that can be found from border between Slovenia and Italia to Bosnia. Dragonlike appearance also suggests the same thing, as it was believed that Olms are undeveloped offspring of dragons.
